Ulster Orchestra appoints Female Conductor

The Ulster Orchestra have unveiled its new concert season for 2011-2012 and introduced its new Principal Conductor, JoAnn Falletta, the Orchestra’s first female Principal Conductor and the first American to be appointed to the post. The unveiling took place at the home of the Ulster Orchestra, The Ulster Hall, Belfast.
The Ulster Orchestra are a full 62 piece professional orchestra based in Belfast who may be booked in their entirety or in various parts for private performances for corporate groups, gala dinners and business events.
Entitled ‘World of Music, the Orchestra’s 46th Season involves 32 main season concerts - including a world première - and nine lunchtime concerts featuring the work of more than 60 composers from 12 countries around the world, spanning over three hundred years of music, and involving more than 20 guest conductors and almost 40 soloists.
“The launch of a new Season is always exciting,” said Declan McGovern, the Ulster Orchestra’s Chief Executive, “especially this year, as we welcome as our new Principal Conductor, JoAnn Falletta, an artist of international distinction whom The New York Times described as ‘…one of the finest conductors of her generation.’
The Season opens on 23 September with the welcome return to Belfast of the outstanding British pianist Paul Lewis and is full of traditional favourites like Handel’s Messiah, the New Year Viennese Gala; Family Concerts include The Snowman and Family Film Favourites as well as a host of Popular Classics concerts. The season will close in May with the inimitable Sir James Galway in the Orchestra’s first Promenade Concert in over a decade, which will take place at Belfast’s Waterfront Hall.
